Delft city centre, The Netherlands

I didn't spend much time in Delft and to be honest, I spent more time partying than visiting.

A friend of mine is a student at the universiy in Delft and I vsited him for a night in february 2011.

I found a pleasant and modern town, with many shops and modern buildings, as well some very nice historic sights.

Nieuwe Kerk and Maria van Jessekerk church Towers in Delft, The Netherlands

The first tower on this picture is from the St Ursula Church, better known ar Nieuwe Kerk, or new church.
It dates back from the 14th Century so it's not really new, but it was Delft's second parish church, thus the name.

Inside, there is the mausoleum of the Oranje-Nassau family, the current royal family of the Netherlands.

Maria van Jessekerk Church in Delft, The Netherlands

Netherlands King William the Silent was shot in Delft in 1584. The royal family tradional burial place was in Breda at that time, but as the city was occupied by the Spaniards, William was buried in Delft.
Since then, all Dutch monarchs have been buried here.

But don't expect to visit it, the private royal family crypt is not open to the public.

On the left is a picture of the Maria van Jessekerk, a neo-Gothic Roman Catholic church from the 19th Century.
Before 1972, and was named St. Jozef Church, but I don't know why they changed the name.

Canals in Delft, The Netherlands

Pretty canals run through Delft, side by side with pedestrian streets with boutiques and cafés.

Bicycles, design modern houses, large paves streets... Yes, that's definitely the Netherlands

After this short walk around Delft, I went to take the train to Düsseldorf in Germany. But as I had to change trains in the town of Venlo, so I took some time to visit that city.

Cycle along the canals, past sand dunes, windmills, tulips and wild national parks. Reward yourself with warm appeltaart, then learn to swallow a raw herring without flinching.
