After an intense first day at the Hellfest with some amazing shows by Billy Idol, Motörhead, The Quireboys and other top acts, the time for the first headliner of the day finally came: The one, the only, the master... Alice Cooper!
Taking a summer break from Mötley Crüe's Final Tour, he was here to provide a full show, with all the horror gimmiks we could expect.
I've had the chance to see Alice Cooper several times in recent years, and this one was of his best concerts! Setlist, show, atmosphere and performance... every aspect was close to perfection!
Alice changed clothes on almost every song and brought all the toys: his whip, his sword, his Alice-faced dollar notes, his Frankenstein monster and of course, the guillotine! A nurse with a living dead make-up came and went throughout the show trying to kill him but somehow Alice always manages to Raise The Dead...
It's always impressive, no matter how many times you've seen this on video or on stage!
And it's never exactly the same, Alice always takes care to change a few details between the different tours so you don't get tired, and you never get enough!
Starting with Department Of Youth was a blast. Then came No More Mr Nice Guy and Under My Wheels... He's got so many hits and he knew exactly which ones the should play in order to create a perfect festival setlist.
Most of the songs were classics except I'll Bite Your Face Off, and we had some songs not played so often, like Lost In America.
Since Orianthi left the band in 2014, Alice decided to keep the sound that's been achieved with 3 guitars, but also the image.
So, he
hired another female guitar player, Nita Strauss, formerly of the Iron Maiden tribute band The Iron Maidens.
She's a great asset to the band! Not only she's a gifted guitar player, she's got the right attitude of a sexy horror queen.
The rest of the band has been stable for some years now, and that's just perfect bacause all are gifted musicians and there's a great chemistry between them.
I was particularly impressed once again by Glen Sobel, definitely one of the best drummers in Rock music.
Ryan Roxy is like the second showman in the band, giving a touch of Glam Rock, while Tommy Henriksen shows the Metal side and Chuck Garric is in between.
Alice Cooper is still the best shock rock act on earth. One might think that seeing the band in broad daylinght won't be ideal, but this is wrong... Even if a lightshow would have added a creepier atmosphere, Alice remins the master, no matter the time of the day.
An Alice Cooper show is the perfect balance between horror and humour in Rock Music, and today the performance was just outstanding.
Maybe it could have been even better at a later hour and with a longer set... but just like it was, it was nothing less than the best concert of the whole Hellfest 2015, without any doubt!
Next band on stage was another classic, British Heavy Metal legends Judas Priest.
