The first place I got as I started my walk around Taipei was here: The Peace Park in the Zhongzheng District.

Its complete name is actually 228 Peace Memorial Park.
This comes from the 228 Incident, a 1947 anti-government uprising. It resulted in many deaths (from 10 000 to more than 30 000, depending on the sources).
This happened on february 28 1947, thus the reference to the number 228..
