Žabljak

I went to Podgorica’s bus station to check the schedules for Žabljak, a small town Montenegro's northern mountains which is the gateway for Durmitor National Park.

There were only 3 buses a day: one at 5:45 and two in the afternoon.
So, the next day I woke up at 4:30 in the morning, took a quick shower and went to station to catch the bus.

I had to change for a minibus in the town of Nikšić (sounds like Nikki Sixx!) half of the way between Podgorica and Žabljak.

The picture on the left is the small Žabljak bus station, and the red minibus was my transport to the town.

Žabljak is a typical mountain town, with colourful houses spread around.

At 1456 meters above the sea level, Žabljak is one of the highest towns of the Balkans.

Žabljak was almost completely destroyed during the Balkan Wars in the early 20th Century... and again during World War II!

The only old building remaining is the 1862 is the Church of the Holy Transfiguration, locally known as Saborna Crkva Svetog Preobrazenja, or Crkva Svetog Preobraženja.

The church was built to commemorate a battle won against the Ottoman Turks in the 19th Century.

Another monument with a pyramid shape reminds a more recent war: The Monument for the Victims of Fascism, or Spomenik Zrtvama Fasizma na Zabljaku.

On the plates are the names of 14 752 people who died fighting against fascism during World War II in Montenegro.

To the right of the bus station I had to follow the road to Durmitor Nation Park, where after an easy hike through the forest and mountains, I was going to find the place I wanted to visit the most in Montenegro: The Black Lake.
