On my Lonely Planet Eartern Europe guidebook, the chapter on Kotor starts with the
words “Kotor is a big ssecret”. And they’re right! If you’re heading to the
Adriatic Coast, Kotor should definitely be on your travel plans. |
|
I arrived to Kotor quite late. The route from Podgorica is a very scenic one:
it’s a mountain route bordering the sea. Truly beautiful, even more at sunset.
Kotor’s bus station is very close to the walled old town. There several daily connections
to many towns in Montenegro, as well as to Dubrovnik in Croatia. |
|
I slept at the Montenegro Hostel Kotor, located right in the old walled town.
The staff is very helpful and the place is very pleasant and clean.
Kotor is the town at the edge of the Bay of Kotor. You may read in some tourist
brochures that this is Europe’s southernmost fjord. Don’t fall into the tourist
trap! That’s just a nonsense marketing argument, as the Fjord of Kotor does not
exist. The Bay of Kotor is a ria, a submerged river canyon. In this case it’s the
Bokelj River which disappeared under the sea. |
|
On this picture you can see the bay nowadays, and try to imagine how it looked
ages ago.
