It was on a warm, clear and sunny day that we flew back from Narsarsuaq to Reykjavík. This was one of the best flights I’ve ever made!
Here are some pictures of that unforgettable flight for you to enjoy! |
There were four flights from Narsarsuaq to Reykjavík that day. I booked the one at 1pm but at the check-in desk they offered us to take the following flight.
So, we enjoyed a 3 hours more in Greenland.
We used this time to visit the Narsarsuaq Museum at Bluie West One and to write some postcards while enjoying a Tuborg Beer at the Blue Ice Café. |
All passengers were on time so the plane departed 10 minutes before schedule.
The plane was a Fokker 50 from Air Iceland. As we took off from the runway, we could see the mighty mountains around Eriksfjord.
Then we turned south and flew right by the middle of Qooroq Ice Fjord and the glacier!

Then we got close to a couple of plateau mountains, while still gaining altitude, and the landscape became all white!
The icecap covers 83% of Greenland, but that’s difficult to notice on the Southern Coast when you’re sailing or hiking.
We did a hike to the inland ice, we saw glaciers and we sailed through Icebergs, but we didn’t venture into the ice cap. |
One could imagine that the part of Greenland covered with ice would look flat, but that’s wrong. There are dozens of mountains and high peaks emerging from the ice.
On other parts, there were cracks in the ice, leaving some windows of blue ice in sight.
After a few minutes, ice fjords began to appear as we reached the rugged southern coast of Greenland. We saw the icebergs spread along the coast as we were leaving the land behind. |
This picture shows several mountain peaks out of the Greenland ice sheet.
These peaks are called Nunatak. |
It's a Greenlandic word but it's widely used everywhere: There's even a rock band named Nunatak... they're based in Antarctica and their members are scientists based there... Who said rock'n'roll couldn't everywhere?

This was the last sight I had from the largest island in the world... for now.
Someday I’ll go back to this wonderful land! Or at least... I hope so... |
For the rest of the flight, the sky was cloudy.
Our Nordic summer holidays were not over! We still had some time in Reykjavík and Iceland!
