The Second Coming: Egypt, Israel and the Palestinian Territories

Summer 2008Djoser Pyramid in Saqqarah

Not far from the hotel we met a very nice taxi driver who offered to take us to Saqqarah and Dahshur.
He had a very comfortable car and he’s a great driver.
It is possible to go to Saqqara on public transport but as we didn’t have much time, we decided to go with him.
Going out of Cairo is a total mess, traffic is just chaotic and you have lines of cars everywhere, at any time of the day. |

I asked our driver how he felt about Egypt, if closer to Africa or to the Middle East.
Surprisingly, he answered Africa! I don’t think that every Egyptian agrees with him, after all, Egyptian contemporary culture is closer to countries like Syria or Qatar than to Kenya or Burkina Faso...
Anyway, this happens when a country is between two world regions, like Turkey, Russia, Georgia and even Cyprus Spain or France. |
