SLAYER
The Big Four at Tuborg Green Fest presented by Sonisphere Festivals
Romexpo - Bucharest, Romania

After having cancelled a few shows because of Tom Araya’s voice problems, finally Slayer was able to tour. And that's great news!
They were the only band of The Big Four to have exactly the same line-up that made them famous: Tom Araya, Kerry King, Jeff Hanneman and Dave Lombardo.
Slayer are currently playing their whole 1990 album Seasons in the Abyss, but they do that on their club shows, not at the festivals. |
|
Instead, Slayer gave us a bizarre setlist, composed of several recent songs. It was the only band to do so, the rest of the Big Four concentrated mostly on their classics.
But Slayer generally tours Europe once a year, so it’s not hard to hear their classics. Still, at a festival like The Big Four one could expect more old school songs, as all the other bands did.
Anyway, new songs from the album World Painted Blood sound great on live.

Slayer is an energy machine.
When they get on stage you know that’s going to be fast, loud and merciless, and tonight’s show was no exception!
Drums and guitars had a very good sound, but the bass wasn’t loud enough and it was difficult to hear.
For the first time at a Slayer show I saw the audience quite calm. Not much pogo, few slammers, but lots of headbangers.
Some of the most appreciated moments by the audience were War Ensemble, God Hates Us All and Seasons In the Abyss.

Slayer didn’t have a backdrop, not a giant screen, nor inverted crosses, as in some previous times I’ve seen them.
They just had a wall of Marshall amps on stage.
I wish they could have used their full production.
Dave Lombardo goes with all the honours, as one of the most impressive metal drummers.
He plays fast and plays right, this man is a walking metronome! |
|
Tom Araya voice sometimes faded away, and he made the audience sing a few parts of some songs, like War Ensemble.
Yes, his voice might not be what it used to be but, hey! He’s been screaming and singing fast vocal lines for 30 years with the same energy! Slayer have always toured intensively so Araya was doing his best, and I think that it was still very good, even if not perfect. |
|
Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King have a unique way to torture their guitars.
As usual, they didn’t move much around the stage, but seeing those guys standing there is impressive.
They are both imposing, especially Kerry King wearing those huge chains out of his trousers. |
|
On the funny side Jeff Hanneman played almost the whole show with his Heineken guitar: it has the Heineken logo but instead of the beer name, it reads Hanneman.
Slayer did a very good show, but not exceptional.
In my opinion, the performances of Anthrax and Megadeth were better.
The show would have been right on another festival, but I expected a different setlist as this show was part of The Big Four Tour .

Well, only one band left on the festival. We went to drink a couple of beers and wait for Metallica to begin.
