Spike from The Quireboys live in Paris 2009

This year, something exceptional happened: The Quireboys played twice around Paris.

The first gig was in May, opening for Crucified Barbara. Now The Quireboys were back but they didn’t play exactly in Paris: The show saw scheduled at the Forum, in the town of Vauréal, a few miles away from the capital.

This was my first time there. Vauréal is a small but nice place, and the Forum is a very nice venue. I’d say it can accommodate up to 300 persons. It has a quite large stage, staff is friendly, and beer is cheap. The only problem is that there is no public transport to get there so unless you have a car, it can be long and difficult to get there. Cergy is the nearest city with a train station, but still you have to take a connecting bus to Vauréal. Moreover concerts finish late and transport finishes before midnight so you can’t rely on public transport.

Paul Guerin from The Quireboys live in Paris, October 9 2009

The Quireboys hit the stage at around 10pm. The band started with a blues intro, before Spike came on stage and began to sing Don’t Bite The Hand.

They sound was very clear and just loud enough for a good Rock’n’Roll show. The lightshow was OK too.

Some sound problems appeared on Paul Guerin’s guitar, but those were quickly solved by a roadie.

With 5 songs out of 12, most of the setlist was cetered around

Seeing The Quireboys live is a really nice experience. I had seen them before on summer festivals and as opening band…but this was the first time I was attending a headlining show. And I don’t think they disappointed anybody! They gave it all on their performance, it was clear that they were enjoying the show as much as the audience. And the best of all? They played for almost two hours!

Spike just can’t stop moving. He throws is microphone in the air, walks the stage from side to side, and even reinvents some vocal melodies, giving the songs a whole new feeling.
Guy Griffin’s guitar is part of the soul of The Quireboys. He played all our favourites catchy riffs with his highly recognizable feeling.

Paul Guerin too is great on guitars, and he’s closer to the public.  He spends his time pulling faces as he plays solos, and keeps on headbanging and singing choirs during the whole show.

There was a new bass player: Jimi Jimmi was replaced on bass by Damon Williams.

The setlist was an anthology of their career. Most of the songs were from the latest album Homewreckers & Heartbreakers and their first album, A Bit Of What You fancy, which is a masterpiece. But they played songs from every record!

It’s easy to get the impression that a band like The Quireboys is enjoying its time on stage. I’ve seen them playing in big stages on festivals, as an opening band and now as a headliner, and they have always been giving it all.
Once again, another great Quireboys concert, and I’m already waiting for the next.
