Tree years the The Age Of The Joker, the most fearless Heavy Metal band in the galaxy goes outer space again to defend the Earth.
This is not just another Rocket Ride... Tobias Sammet, the new head of the Space Police, and Edguy, the Defenders of The Crown, take us to a ride through the universe they have created.
Fasten your seat belts, we start with a fast song, Sabre & Torch, a pure Heavy Metal tune. In contrast, the first title track of the album – Space Police – is a typical Edguy classic with keyboards and a catchy chorus.
It’s the same vein of the songs Vain Glory Opera and Superheroes, and the result is great.
Then comes the other title-track – Defenders Of The Crown – which is in my opinion one of the best songs of the album. This one is meant to be played live and everyone will be invited to sing.
Hold on, some turbulences are shaking the spaceship. Oh no, those aren´t turbulences, the crew is dancing with the Love Tyger! That one is already a hit! If you like songs like Lavatory Love Machine, this one is for you.
We’re entering the dark and heavy Realms Of Baba Yaga, a tune with a crushing riff and high-flying solo… and here comes a UFO: the cover version of Rock Me Amadeus from the Austrian pop singer Falco. It’s really surprising to hear a Hard Rock version of this song. But someone had to do it and actually, I think Edguy was the right band for that. By the way, here's Tobias Sammet singing in his mother tongue!
After this one I felt that there’s a change in the album’s direction, like if the spaceship made a detour to that place called Avantasia. Do Me Like A Caveman isn’t a title for an Avantasia song, but the piano and the verse melody definitely reminds me of Tobias' other band.
Back to some classic Heavy Metal with Shadow Eaters and then… there’s the only ballad of the album, Alone In Myself.
It’s an unusual song for the band but it could well be Edguy’s next radio single.
The journey ends with an 8 minute adventure called The Eternal Wayfearer. This one goes through several atmospheres and there’s a lot of work behind it. It’s the kind of song that you can listen 5 times in a row.
It could definitely have been recorded by Avantasia, but it wasn’t. This masterpiece belongs to Edguy and it’s a perfect to end the album.
So, we have safely reached our final destination. I hope you will enjoy the journey as much as I did!
Those who had high expectations on Edguy’s tenth studio album won’t be disappointed. The album is very diverse and combines the typical Edguy gimmicks with some new musical horizons. Also, the band goes on melting its legendary sense of humour with some more serious subjects.
So, don’t be fooled by this horrible cover artwork, Space Police - Defenders Of The Crown is already one of the highlights of 2014!
